Artist Statement
The sole task of Henry VIII’s wife: deliver a male heir.
Only one of his six wives succeeded, and she died in childbirth.
Two of his marriages were annulled; two ended in beheadings. Pawns of their families and nations, these extraordinary women were the property of men. Trapped, isolated and often afraid, they lived in unimaginable luxury while fighting for their dignity, religion, children and survival. Their lives changed the course of history, and have captured my imagination for years. My pieces symbolize their reproductive success or failure, the way they died, and the order in which they were married.
